  • A Year of Twitter

    1

I have been so busy posting to my blog on a regular basis I belatedly realized that I have hit 1000 posts on Twitter! I guess my micro-blogging habit has really interfered with my regular blog updates (not that I was doing terribly well at blogging before the distraction of Twitter…). I spent some time going back through all my fascinating posts and realized that I’ve nearly hit another milestone: 1 year on Twitter. My first post was September 18th, 2008.

It was at times sweet, nostalgic, painful and hilarious to read my thoughts on events of the last year. There were very few things that I couldn’t find a context for in my 140 characters; my memory is bad but Twitter gave me just enough thread to unravel huge sweaters of ridiculous stories. I’m in awe of Twitter all over again for giving me back the highlights of day to day life that I would never have remembered otherwise.

So in an effort to actually post something on my blog, and to effectually recap the last 12 months in collections of 140 characters or less, here they are: my favorite (amusing, nostalgic and/or topically relevant) tweets of the last year.

  • The [adjective] Old Days

    0

In the process of moving my blog over from Blogger I had to shift some “categories” and “tags” and I’m still updating old posts that had nothing. So it’s been in turns, funny, pathetic and nostalgic to review my earlier posts. A couple of posts in particular stood out: some comments on politics, old family trips, my yearly devotion to autumn. But there were two things I really enjoyed, and I think they’re a good reason to actually wallow in my nostalgia for a moment.

    Mac vs. PC
I stumbled across a couple of pro-Windows posts from years past. I found it hilarious to read about Windows Vista since I have NEVER put it on any of my machines at home or at work (although I do have a beta of Windows 7 now… history repeating itself?). The I got my Mac about 8 months ago, my iPhone a few months later, and though I haven’t posted about it I’m waiting anxiously for news about Mac Mini upgrades so I can bring on of those babies home. BTW, I don’t hate Windows or anything. I just like Mac better now.

    The Busy Posts
I knew that things were bad at work last year. Every now and then on bad days I remember how nuts I was and with certain projects popping up again the night-sweats have returned. But going back through some posts from late 2007 and spring of 2008 I really remember how bad things were. I actually think I did a pretty good job of not flipping out more than I did, under the circumstances. I thank my lucky stars we got to hire someone to help me at work before the budget fell into the crapper.

I’m sorry, I completely glossed over this fact in my last post: I got my iPhone. Woohoo!

Before I geek-out completely I’d like to state publicly, for friends and family that have had to deal with me over the last week and forever after this– I’m sorry if I’m ignoring you. My name is Jen and I’m addicted to my iPhone. (Hi Jen.)

It’s just so damn cool! I’ve had the phone for 9 days and I’ve downloaded 38 apps. I have 3 email accounts, 2 calendar tools and a task manager. I’ve created 4 ringtones, taken 2 dozen photos and downloaded 10 games. It’s an addiction. I blame Apple.

Speaking of cool technology, I’ve decided I’m ok with Google taking over the world. And really, cane you blame me? These guys have a functional calendar, online docs and integrated add-ons for Firefox, Thunderbird and, of course, the iPhone (I could probably do a shout-out for their blogging tools too, huh?). And they’re always pushing the enevelope with new stuff like Grand Central and today’s release, the Google Friends Connect.

And a final nerdy thought for the evening: I’m now on Twitter. Feel free to follow me (ncsumarit). I can post from my iPhone! < (That’s enough. I’m sick of me too.)

  • Fall Frolicking

    2

Well, I still feel bad about having dropped my class but there’s no doubt in my mind that was the solution for me. Things have been much easier without a class to worry about, although I do still owe my professor a project from the Spring. But I am good at procrastinating and having flexibility does wonders for my mood– so much less stress! Really makes me not want to go back to grad school, too…

The last few nights I’ve just been home, doing laundry and watching TV. Sure, I still work from home, check email, update Drupal etc., but it’s easier now that I don’t get home at 8:00pm twice a week.

Tonight I got to baby-sit my niece, Jenny, which would have been nearly impossible when taking classes. I’m not sure she had a great time but we’ll give it another shot post-teething and on a night when she’s in a better mood.
Tomorrow night I’m considering getting a cheap ticket to the NCSU v. Florida St. football game, blowing off work early and tailgating with friends.
Friday night is improv. Saturday, a wedding (Congrats Amy and Garrison!). Next week: meteor shower, haunted trail, pumpkin carving and Halloween Party. I love fall.

In other news, I got a Mac! Well, work got a Mac and they let me use it; I could never have afforded it myself. I am a visual person so, well… it didn’t take long to impress me. I’m not saying I’m a Mac person yet (I don’t want to be that) but I would say I’m a little more evenly divided on the issue. And someone asked me the other day if it was hard to go back and forth (PC desktop at work, Mac laptop) and I realized I hadn’t even thought about it.

Finally, I may not be a Mac user but I do want an iPhone. That thing is hot. H-O-T. I spent last Friday night sitting on my couch, watching a 30-minute iPhone informational video. I’m dating the iPhone. Sad.

That’s it for me. Enjoy the leaves and the crisp fall breezes. Go Canes!

  • Come to My Windows Vista

    1

If you have any interest in computers you know that Microsoft is planning on releasing it’s new version of Windows- Windows Vista (which, by the way, lame-ass marketing attempt with that name). The real story behind it however, is that it won’t be ready until January 2007 – at the earliest. This is a product more than 5 years in development and long awaited.

I am a Windows girl and I am proud to say it. Despite the fact that I am a designer and use Illustrator, Photoshop and Flash, I prefer the intuitive design and functionality of a Windows machine to a Mac. And yea, I do use a Mac. I have a Windows, Mac and a Linux box hanging around my office and though the Windows machine is my primary machine, I use all three regularly. This is why I get so annoyed when I come across sworn Mac users- not because I don’t think it’s a good machine, but because they inevitably have this opinion that Mac’s are the PC’s of the gods, and that anyone who uses one will naturally be instantly converted. I do not share that sentiment. I like right-clicking, playing games on my machine and using web browsers that display correctly.

That being said, Microsoft is doing it’s best to shoot itself in the foot these days. They have released Internet Explorer 7 which is buggy at the best of times and blue-screen inducing at the worst. They have delayed Windows Vista repeatedly after already beginning a marketing push for it and they have also delayed Office 2007, which appears to ready to go, but is waiting so as to allow a one-two (Vista-Office) punch. Finally, Microsoft is requiring at least 1GM of RAM in machines running Vista. That alone is not a bad idea- people should be moving in that direction anyway. However, if 1GB is a minimum requirement, you have to assume it will take 2BG or more to get quality performance. Let’s not even talk about the rash of required patches to keep XP running and to fix the massive security flaws.

I happen to have had the opportunity to play with Vista- it’s pretty (very Mac-like) but still very buggy. I don’t feel desperate to escape the bounds of Windows XP (yet), but I do feel desperate to know that I am depending on a product whose company can continue to innovate. We all know how important it is to give Bill Gates millions to redistribute to the world’s poor and needy, but it’s also important that the company demonstrate why it’s a product we want on 90% of our PC’s. In trying to combat Google, Yahoo and Apple, they’ve found too many battlefronts and all their products, from Vista to X-box, are suffering for it. Last I heard they were going to try to develop their own graphics and web design applications a la Adobe (and the former Macromedia). I haven’t seen those and I have to assume they’re low priority right now.

I hold out hope that Vista will be released in a timely and bug-free manner, and I’ll have a copy on (or before) the day it’s released. But I will be unhappy to fall back on my Mac if Microsoft can’t get its shit together. Hello Linux!

    [Comment added 4:38pm, 7/28] Total coincidence, I swear- a friend wrote on a similar topic today… http://blogs.lib.ncsu.edu/page/web?entry=macintoshin
